Web Design Evaluation

Preece et al. define testing or evaluation as the process of ’systematically collecting data that informs us about what it is like for a particular user or group of users to use a product for a particular task in a certain type of environment’. (Preece et al. 2002:317) That is to say that it is a process where the interface is tested against the practices and needs of the user. (Faulkner 1998:109) Evaluation is important in design as it aims to ‘eradicate any problems that may be present in a system’. (ibid. 1998:124) Evaluation and amendment of the design at various stages of development helps the designer to verify that the product is suitable for the users’ needs, that they can use the product and indeed they like the product. (Preece et al. 2002:317-319) Preece et al. refer to Tognazzini who asserts that evaluation also ensures that the design team focus on ‘real problems, not imaginary ones’. (ibid. 2002:321)

Evaluation with users underpins a user-centred approach to design. Preece et al. refer to Gould and Lewis who identify three main characteristics of this approach. There is an ‘early focus on users and tasks’ which means understanding users and tasks through observation and analysis, whilst actively involving users from the early stages of design. ‘Empirical measurement’ gauges the performance and reactions of users to storyboards and paper prototypes for example, in the early stages of development and subsequently to software prototypes or simulations for example. Another feature of a user-centred approach is ‘iterative design’ characterised by cycles of ‘design, test, measure and redesign’. (Preece et al. 2002:285)

Internet Home Business - Targeted Website Traffic Building Methods Explained

There is a huge difference between Guaranteed Visitors and Targeted Website Visitors. It is sad to read forum posts from new internet home business owners who have purchased a large volume of guaranteed visitors only to be left very disappointed and feeling that they have just thrown good money down the drain because they received no sign-ups and no sales.

Although the temptation to immediately start driving traffic to your new internet home business is very great, don’t fall into the trap of buying guaranteed visitors, because more often than not they are not targeted website visitors. In other words, they are not looking for what your internet home business has to offer. Your aim is to attract website visitors who are looking for exactly what your website has to offer.

Building targeted ongoing traffic to a website is a process that takes time. Sure you can go ahead and start a pay-per-click campaign such as an Adwords campaign on Google, if you know what you are doing. If you are not sure what you are doing, you will only be lining the search engine’s coffers further.

The secret to driving targeted website traffic to your internet home business on an ongoing basis is by naturally building back-links (also known as incoming links or inbound links) to your website. Please note I said building back-links not buying back-links. Buying traffic is not going to add any one-way back-links to your website and buying back-links is certainly frowned upon by Google.

Once you start counting back-links to your website instead of dollars and only use internet marketing methods that naturally increase your back-links, then you will have truly understood what internet marketing is all about.

Buying so called guaranteed visitors is a once-off thing which you will never benefit from again. You will benefit far more by using internet marketing methods that will continue to attract targeted visitors to your website well into the future. You are building an internet home business and there is no limit to the building process. Building takes time, perseverance, persistence and dedication. You can’t cut corners and expect to build your home business online in a week or month and generate massive targeted traffic and create internet income in a short space of time.

The exciting part about targeted traffic building is that the most highly effective methods can be totally free if you are prepared to put in the daily consistent work. Remember, that if you were building a brick and mortar business you would also have to work consistently on a daily basis.

Ideally you need to start driving targeted website traffic to your internet home business from different sources. By that I mean different search engines, ezines, blogs, web directories, forums and other websites.

Best of all you can do all this virtually for free.

The most important thing is to own your own domain name so that you can optimize your website for your chosen keywords. If you are already promoting a number of affiliate links you could add them all to one website, even have a separate web page for each affiliate opportunity and optimize each web page with different keywords.

Owning your own domain will enable you to continually build back-links and add fresh content to your website and these actions will see your website appear in the organic search engine results. In other words, your internet home business website will receive free targeted website traffic.

Once you own your own domain, the next step before you even start thinking about generating targeted website traffic, is to learn html so that you can optimize your website with your chosen keywords. Search engine optimization is not difficult, it just takes some time and concentration and it is something you are going to be continually working on to keep up with your competitors.

Having optimized our website you can then start writing and submitting articles based on the theme of your website with your keywords hyperlinked to your website in the author’s resource box. This method of article marketing builds one-way back-links to your website, which are crucial in order for your website to gain good positions in the search engine results. Try and write and distribute at least two articles a week.

Your articles could end up in ezines that are distributed to hundreds of subscribers. All it takes is for an ezine editor to choose your article from one of the directories you have submitted to and include it in their weekly ezine to their entire optin list. Other websites may also select your article to publish on their website or blog to add content.

Article marketing can have some major spin-offs. Once you have submitted a few articles and start to become recognized you could be invited to become a guest author on one of the authority sites, which will also attract targeted website traffic. Not that the authority sites endorse your website, but the sheer fact that you are featured will add credibility to your internet home business.

Writing and distributing articles can be totally free if you have the time, or you could use the services of a ghost writer to write unique articles for you and pay for an article submission service. I would recommend that you write your own articles and submit unique copies (change the original by at least 50% and target different keywords with each copy) of them yourself to high PR article directories so that you can ensure that your author’s resource box correctly reflects your targeted keywords.

By personally signing-up at each Article Directory that you submit to gives you the opportunity to complete your profile where you can hyperlink your keywords to your website and build more back-links.

Forums give you the facility to create a signature under the Profile section and here too is the opportunity to hyperlink your keywords to your website to build back-links.

By submitting your website details to quality, SEO friendly web directories is not only another way of building back-links but another way that targeted visitors can find your website.

These targeted website traffic building methods, although highly effective, take time to take effect. But you are using internet marketing methods that will attract streams of targeted website visitors to your internet home business for months if not years to come.

Count back-links instead of dollars. Work at increasing your back-links daily and automatically your internet home business will start receiving targeted website traffic.

How to Increase Website Traffic - It’s About Work

I help people trying to make a living online almost every day. Users of my digital products, member’s of my traffic sites and even just commenters on my blogs. The number of people that ask me for a simple set of directions that will help them increase website traffic, and ultimately make them more money, is pretty substantial. I respond to almost every request personally… or at least I try my best to.

Helping people is why I started working online in the first place. If you’ve been following my work, then you already know my first sizable site was a free resource helping people to get their car’s emission control system fixed without breaking the bank! It’s been a long road since that project, but my goal has always been the same… helping people solve problems.

I become a website traffic “junkie” very quickly and eventually dedicated the majority of my time to this one area of making a living online. In my opinion, learning to increase website traffic is the single most important thing you can do to get results online. You can have a great product or service, but if you can’t get your message out to interested people, your site’s going to be, well… lonely.

I’m in the process of putting together a new report on how to use free, or low cost, resources to increase website traffic. The manual will be geared for the newer marketers, but will cover some intermediate and advanced ideas as well that should not be tackled until the proper groundwork has been done.

The resource book is going to be released as a completed project, but I’m going to try something new… As each segment is put together, I’m going to release the content as a free article through this series. This will allow you to take immediate action steps and follow through the series on a day to day basis without getting too overwhelmed by having a “manual” dropped on your desk! The key to starting and running a successful online business is first getting targeted website traffic, and then work to continually increase website traffic to an almost unmanageable point.

So first… Today’s article is going to serve as a primer. I want you to understand the objectives of the series so that you can get the most from it, and also highlight a few things that we’ll cover. This is certainly not an exhaustive list, but just my initial thoughts on important topics. Based on suggestions from the majority of my members, I’m thinking we should cover most of the free website traffic techniques I use to increase website traffic on a daily basis.

I’m going to attempt to provide links to videos for some systems as well, to help give you a clearer picture on how some of this works. If you ever have a suggestion or request to cover a specific topic, please feel free to contact me through the links below. Here’s some of what we’ll be covering regarding how to increase website traffic:

List Builders
Viral Tools
Surf For Traffic Programs
Traffic Exchange Programs
Article Marketing
Joint Ventures
Web 2.0 Strategies
Search Engine Optimization
Pay-Per-Click Techniques

And there will be more, but this is a good start. As you can see from the list it is going to be a bit of work both getting the initial traffic, and then managing to increase website traffic… but it’s worth it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people go from barely making enough to cover their website hosting bill, to actually making a very good living online just by learning to increase website traffic.

So if you’ve ever struggled to make it online, and you know that if you could just generate enough traffic to get your message out there, then you would be successful, then keep an eye on this series. I’m going to teach you to increase website traffic quickly, as inexpensively as possible, and with the least amount of wasted time or labor. But remember… be prepared to do a little work because learning to increase website traffic is a job, but it’s one that pays you back over and over again!

In the first few lessons, we’re going to cover List Building programs. I’m going to save you the time of trying to figure out which ones you’ll actually get results from by handing you the three I use regularly to get consistent and substantial results. There’s a number of tactics you should employ to get the most from these systems. Put the suggestions I give to you into an action plan, and you’ll be rocketing past the ninety-five percent of people who use them all wrong. But I’m getting ahead of myself… more tips to increase website traffic in the next installment. You’ll also get a sneak peek inside my newest project at TheListAuction.com!

Away From Links And Toward Popularity?

Google has established itself as a leader in the search engine industry. Effectively Google retains, month after month, almost 1/2 of search engine inquiries. Their PPC advertising model, Adwords, is second to none and the possibilities for website publishers are endless with their Adsense, ad-publishing client. The company has created popular computer programs such as: Google Earth, Google Desktop, Google Toolbar, Picasa, and SketchUp. And they operate such online services as: Gmail, Google Trends, Google Scholar, Google News, and Google Groups.

The reason I mention these facts is that there have been many in the search engine world that have speculated that Google is moving away from links and toward popularity. What I mean is that in the traditional sense, Google has used the data based on the individual links that a certain website has pointing to it. There are several factors involved in evaluating the links data that helps Google determine the popularity of a site and importance of its content. In the new sense, many have speculated that Google has been able to gain a finite amount of aggregate usage data from its various programs and services that allows them to further develop their algorithm into a more accurate and relevant service. This allows them to really evaluate a site based on how popular it truly is and weigh it’s content and position in the search engines accordingly.

Honestly to me, it’s an ingenious idea and in part it has been verified by a post on Matt Cutts Blog where he mentions the new efforts Google is using to reduce bandwidth. He mentions the fact that Google uses their popular Adsense service to help index the web faster. This spreads the indexing load out a bit and encourages Google to use the same technique on their other popular services.

So what does this mean for the individual webmaster? This means that the direction of search results could take a drastic shift from the norm of link popularity to actual user popularity, which is more powerful than the alternatives. So in the future, I still believe link popularity will remain a cornerstone of the search engines algorithm, but that data will supplemented or be the supplement, in part to the popularity data.

Search Engine - Friendly Way to Move Website Pages

As your website continues to develop and grow, there will be times that you may want to reorganize the pages of your website design. When you expand or change your online business, it makes good sense to implement these reorganizations so that you can better manage your data and so that site visitors can easily and logically follow the content on your web pages.

However, as you have built your website, the search engine spiders have been crawling and indexing your website and they expect to find pages where they were last posted. Also, other web pages may have been linked to those pages, and if you move them, their links will no longer point to valid page locations and eventually, you will begin to lose search engine ranking.

Fortunately, creating a 301 redirect is a solution to the problem that will make both the search engine spiders happy as well as maintain your inbound link integrity. You will need access to the .htaccess file in your website’s root directory. If you do not have access, ask your website administrator for assistance.

To redirect the page, add the following code:

redirect 301 /original_folder_location/original_page_name.htm http://www.your-domain.com/new_folder_location/new_page_name.htm

It is critical that you use the relative path for the original location (remove the “http”//www.your-domain.com) and leave a space between the original and new location. For the new location, you need to give the full URL, including the “http://www”.

This solution assumes that your server utilizes Apache. If not, consult your web administrator to find out what your options are for redirecting pages.

Submitting to Web Link Directories For Links - PR and SEO - Good?

In reality, the answer to the Web directory submission question isn’t as easy as a yes or no. We have definitely seen improvements in rankings that can be directly attributed to directory submissions. But, we always adhere to SEO and search engine marketing best-practices. It is certainly within the realm of possibility that a poorly conducted directory submission campaign could be considered spam by search engines, but we’ve never had that happen at Darrin Ward.

Also, there are different types of directories, from free to paid, and from broad in nature to the niche topic directories. They don’t all fall into the same bucket of good and bad directories. Instead, you need to do some due diligence to determine which are the good and which are the bad.

I personally maintain that submitting to Web directories can be useful, and that they should be done. However, I don’t recommend that you rely on them as an SEO strategy (not even a little bit). In reality, you may receive a few targeted visits from directory listings, but you won’t notice big jumps in search rankings or in PageRank.

One way or another, I always make directory submission conditional on a few things:

  • Best Directories Only: You need to submit to the highest quality Web directories only! Your directory list should be no more than about 10-15, and it should include the major well-respected directories (DMOZ, Yahoo Directory, etc.) and also some niche directories that specialize in your industry. Perform due diligence on each of the directories to make sure that they don’t have spam on their pages, that they have a good reputation, and that they have never been banned from search engines.
  • Appropriate Section Only: Do NOT submit to directory sections based on the PageRank of the section pages. Find the section that is most appropriate for your Website, and submit there. You’ll know when you’ve hit the right section, because some of your competitors will probably be listed there also. (We’re aiming for thematic linking here, rather than PageRank!)
  • Use Unique Titles and Descriptions: Write a unique title and description for each directory. Submitting the same title and description to all of the directories is not what you want to be doing. You should spend the time to create new ones each time you submit, and of course, they should contain your main target keywords in a natural language manner (no spamming!)
  • Deep-Linking is OK: Deep linking is when you submit the URL of pages other than your homepage. If the directories you’re submitting to allow deep-linking, then it may be appropriate to submit sub-pages on your site, depending on the category matches. You definitely don’t want to do this for every directory though. Remember however: one link per directory is enough.

As for using paid-submission services… I’ve done it in the past when I needed to save some time (and energy). If you carefully dictate how and where they submit to, they can be worth it. Never let them run rampant however, because they’ll end up spam-submitting your site to 40 million irrelevant directory and you probably won’t like the outcome.

Inexpensively Staging Your Home For a Quick Sale

Staging a home can be a lucrative task, if done correctly. However do not feel discouraged if you do not have enough funds in the bank to cover a full on home renovation. Home staging is a technique used to make a house on the market look more appealing to buyers. Staging makes the potential buyer envision living in the space. The buyers will be under the impression that they are in control but, quite the opposite is true. With playing up the key features and downplaying the not so complementary features in the home all work to your advantage and work to put the exact image you want the prospective buyers to perceive of your home.

The most inexpensive thing you can do is paint. Painting the walls with a neutral color scheme is not only visually relaxing and warms up the interior, painting in a neutral color scheme emanates a sense of luxury. That luxury came to you at the mere price of a few cans of paint at the local Home Depot. Not a bad exchange at all.

Cleaning a filthy worn carpet is a money saving strategy most home sellers overlook. Just because a carpet is worn and torn, does not mean it can’t be revived back into the beauty it was in its previous years. Stripping flooring and re-staining is generally a cost effective alternative to an all out extravagant purchase of a brand new floor for the entire home. Why spend thousands more on something when you will not be living there. You may be influenced to think that replacing flooring in your home will boost the appraisal price that is true and false. It may or may not boost your appraisal price, that is a gamble you will have to take. Let’s say it does boost your appraisal price, fantastic. However, the bottom line is you will not get 100% return on this investment. So therefore it is not profitable and not worth your effort.

Make a cramped floor plan look open. Play with the placement of your furniture until you get a seating arrangement that flows from one space to another. Nothing can hurt a sale as bad as clutter and buyers being under the impression that the property is lacking in space. This is crucial to selling your home, and requires no investment. Lastly make sure everything is clean. At an open house, tidy just won’t cut it. Buyers will notice the spider web at the far back corner of your attic, they will notice the chipped paint on your windowsill, and they will even notice the oil splatters on your kitchen stove. Buyers are like food critics, at an open house they feel it is their right and duty to criticize the home, its condition, the home owner’s cleanliness, and the maintenance that is put into the property. Combining all of the inexpensive staging techniques will make for a faster more profitable home sale.

How to Sell Your Used Stuff on Ebay

Are you trying to sell items that you no longer use? Then, get yourself into popular auctions sites like eBay and convert your junk into cold cash.

Here’s how you can multiply your online selling:

1. Clean up your attic. You don’t need to create your own products to get started with online selling. You can clean up your attic or your basement to see if there are items that might be considered treasure by other people. These could be used clothes, old CD or DVD collections, used bags, etc.

2. Put the best price tags for your items. Of course, you can’t expect people to buy your items on their original prices. It would help if you can research the auction site and determine how many similar products are selling. If you are just starting out and have not yet created a good reputation online, it would help if you can lower down your prices to attract more buyers.

3. Use pictures. You’ll be able to increase your chances of making a sale if you can post a picture of your items online. This will give your potential buyers an idea on what your product looks like and it’s condition. Using a digital or camera phone, capture all the angles of your items.

4. Provide detailed description. As your potential buyers will not have chance to take a look at your products before they make a purchase, it is a must that you give them detailed description about your products. You must tell your potential buyers the item’s condition, any accessories included in the purchase, the date of its manufacture, etc.

5. Things to avoid. When listing your items on auction sites, you must avoid using blinking texts, unnecessary graphics, and streaming video that can affect the downloading time. Also, keep your product description short, concise, and direct to the point.

6. Timing. Deciding when to end your bid is very important. Based on researches and several studies, you’ll be able to generate enormous bid if you end your listings on weekends or in the evening.

7. Check your email regularly. People who get interested with your listings might send you with email inquiries. Ensure that you provide answer promptly by checking your inbox at least twice a day. Strive to give your potential buyers all the information they need so you can entice them to do business with you. Remember, when you are able to give these people great customer service, they are most likely to come back for more.
